Department Description
The Community Development Department shall be directly responsible for the administration, management, coordination and enforcement of the City's codes and ordinances relating to planning, zoning and building, including but not limited to, official City Inspectors, professional planners or planning consultants and other employees necessary to achieve the department's mission. The department shall be divided into divisions, including building and zoning and planning and development.

A $42,000 grant from the Abandoned Properties Program administered by the Illinois Housing Authority was received in 2021 and the demolition of 5 abandoned properties will be completed by spring 2022.
Throughout 2020 and 2021 the City worked with local business owners to submit grants for the Downstate Small Business Stabilization Grant Program administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant program was set up to help small businesses with grants of up to $25,000 to deal with COVID-19 related business losses. Prior to the closure of the program the City was successful in helping 12 local business owners obtain grant funding.
