E911The Streator Emergency Telephone System Board was created in 1993 after the citizens of Streator passed a referendum approving an enhanced 911 System. The Streator E.T.S.B. is governed by state law and city ordinance.More commonly known as "The Streator 911 Board", the E.T.S.B. regards public safety as its number one priority. Upholding that priority is often a daunting task, as the board is responsible for purchasing, upgrading, and maintaining all 911 equipment, performing daily maintenance on the 911 database, providing 911 public education, and setting policy with respect to answering and dispatch of 911 calls. All dispatchers, police officers, and fire fighters are employees of the City of Streator, whereas ambulance personnel are employees of Advance Medical Transport ambulance service. Below, we have provided expanded and specific information with respect to the calling of 911. For the moment, however, I would like to direct my comments to the unseen and often unrecognized core personnel of our service. Indeed, a call to 911 does not automatically require dispatch of firefighters, police officers, or ambulance services to the calling location. Rather, the appropriate dispatch of emergency resources is directed as rapidly as possible by our dispatchers. These highly-trained individuals behind the radio and telephone consoles are the first link between the community and its emergency response resources, and they fulfill a critical role in directing our emergency services. Owing to their knowledge, training, and experience, dispatchers contribute regularly to successful capture of suspects and in the saving of lives. As 911 Coordinator and on behalf of the Streator 911 Board, I would like to recognize and thank our 911 operators for the outstanding job they perform each and every day. Anyone with questions about our 911 services or who would like a tour of the 911 center may call 815-672-3111 and request extension 247. Sincerely, Debra J. Hallam, 911 Coordinator e911@ci.streator.il.us The 911 Dispatch CenterThe 911 Dispatch Center handles all police and fire radio traffic, and nearly 70,000 emergency and non-emergency calls were processed during the year, 2003. The center is staffed by four full time and two part time operators, all of whom are employed by the City of Streator. There is generally only one operator on duty at a time.Below is a brief list of some of the 911 operator's duties:
